Svoboda - Czechs should be ready to join Schengen Area in October 2007 - 15-05-2006 - Radio Prague
Foreign Minister Cyril Svoboda announced at the weekend that the Czech Republic should be ready to join the Schengen Area by October next year.
This basically means the dissolution of border controls between Germany, Austria and the Czech Republic. Indeed, if both Slovakia and Poland join (which they are planning to), there will be no border control along the Czech border, at all.
Finally, we're back to before 1918 when you could travel to Vienna without a passport. Of course, there were other restrictions then, but I think this is an interesting successor to the cultural aspects of the Austro-Hungarian Empire.
