PRAGUE, Czech Republic (AP) - New York Rangers forward Jaromir Jagr was chosen as the Czech Republic's athlete of the year on Saturday in a poll of sports journalists.

The 33-year-old NHL veteran won his first World Championship in May to become the 15th player to win Stanley Cup, Olympic and World Championship titles.

Katerina Neumannova, who won the women's 10-kilometre freestyle race in cross country skiing at the Nordic Ski World Championships at Oberstdorf, Germany, in February and was second in the overall World Cup standings, was runner-up.

Jakub Janda, who won the silver and bronze medals in ski jumping at the Nordic Ski World Championships and currently leads the overall World Cup standings, was third.

The Czech Republic ice hockey team, which won the World Championships in Austria, was named team of the year.

Aparently, Czech winter sports are enjoying a resurgence of popularity.
