Svoboda opens in Chicago third Czech consulate in USA
oreign Minister Cyril Svoboda opened a new Czech general consulate in Chicago on Thursday evening (US Central Time), presenting in a ceremonial event the new consul Marek Skolil to the diplomats, local representatives and expatriates present.

The new consulate that works for 11 states of the Midwestern United States is the third Czech office in the USA. The Czech ambassador is in Washington, DC, while the other two consulates are in New York and Los Angeles.
...
The Czech minister said that Chicago was chosen not only because it is the third largest US city and the natural centre of this part of the USA, but also because it is a traditional centre of the Czech community in the USA.

In a 2000 census, over 150,000 of inhabitants of Illinois, whose capital Chicago is, stated they were of Czech origin.

Does that mean that the next consulate will be in Austin, Texas? That's another (and the most surprising) area where a lot of Czechs live.

Hi,

O, sounds interesting!

Now, Czech Government must open the third - I mean, there is a Embassy in Brasília and a Consulate in São Paulo - of Brazil, in Rio de Janeiro.

Not due to a big number of Czech´s background people here, but because of ... well, Rio is the second biggest city here ... and it would be nice to have something that would make things easy for those interested in Czech, in learnign Czech etc.

Good bye.:

Not that surprising....the "coastal prairie" areas on the perimetry of Austin were settled by land hungry Czechs dating back to the mid-1800's -- my bloodline included.  Long, long history of developing the agri-base for Houston, Austin, etc...

And you thought Austin was just a bohemian hide-out in a solely artistic sense! ;-)
