PRAGUE, Jan 10 (CTK) - The assessment of Czech preparedness for accession to the Schengen area started today by the Czech Interior Ministry officials' providing EU Council experts with the relevant information in support of the accession, ministry spokeswoman Radka Kovarova told CTK.

The Czech Republic should enter the Schengen area in October 2007. As from then, the Czech Republic will start issuing common Schengen visas enabling their holders to move around the whole area.

The Schengen agreement on free movement of people was signed by France, Germany and the Benelux countries in 1985 and it took effect 10 years later. At present, the Schengen area comprises 13 of the 15 "old" EU countries, without Britain and Ireland.
