Herald Sun: Tourist warning on Czech taxis [16jan06]
AUSTRALIAN travellers to the Czech Republic have been warned to look out for dodgy taxi drivers. The Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade has updated its travel warning for the eastern European country.
The travel warning already covers pickpockets near tourist sites and robberies in nightclubs by criminals using fake police ID cards.
But it has been updated to cover a taxi scam.
"There have been many recent reports of taxi drivers located at Prague's main railway station refusing to use taxi meters and overcharging travellers," the DFAT warning says.
"To avoid being overcharged, travellers should use officially marked taxis (eg. AAA or Profitaxi) and pre-negotiate fares."
Where have the Australians been? This has been a problem for fifteen year and if anything, it has gotten better. The taxi drivers at Prague train stations and on Wenceslas square are really the only remaining unreliable taxi services. But the advice offered in the article is good. Using AAA or even taxis at the airport rarely if ever results in an unpleasant experience, anymore.
