Castle complex reigns in Czech's Český Krumlov
Four hours by road from Munich, or a couple of hours south by car from Prague, Krumlov is a showcase not just for the looming castle but for fine old stone and stucco buildings that decorate the Old Town in various shades of pastel. Some have Renaissance paintwork on the outside. It's the real thing, and it's quite beautiful. Cafe tables along the river are delightful, even if you are forced to sip hot coffee or Czech brandy under a big umbrella in a wind-driven rain.
If you go to Krumlov, go in shape, and take walking shoes.
Many tourists overlook this little gem in Southern Bohemia (although many don't) but this article should set them straight.
