Politicians, Praguers pay homage to Soviet troops fallen in war - Prague Daily Monitor
Leading Czech politicians, Russian Ambassador Alexei Fedotov and further dozens of people, including Russians living in the Czech Republic and Czech and Russian war veterans, met at Prague's Olsany cemetery today to commemorate the Soviet soldiers who fell in World War II.

A controversial part of Czech history - one of many where the numbers are clear but the interpretation and relative importance of many of them is a subject of hot debate:

The participants laid flowers and wreaths at the fallen soldiers' memorial, and they observed a minute of silence to pay homage to the heroes.

Some of them told CTK that they feel disappointed at the role of the Soviet liberators being played down.

About 144,000 Soviet soldiers fell during the liberation of Czechoslovakia, along with some 33,000 Romanian troops.

The number of fallen Americans, who liberated the westernmost part of the country, is difficult to determine. Some sources put it at 290, other at 180.
