Czechs take the bus abroad to spend 13000 on holidays

Average Czech spends CZK 13,395 on holidays abroad in 2006-ACCKA - Prague Daily Monitor
Prague, Jan 9 (CTK) - The average Czech spent CZK 13,395 on holidays abroad last year, five percent more than a year ago, Czech travel agencies association ACCKA spokesman Tomio Okamura has told CTK.

Given that that is slightly more than the half the average monthly salary, that's not a small sum. But given that it is only 500 EUR, it isn't that much (of course the figure includes all individuals including those who don't travel - I think).

Czechs headed mostly (90 percent) for Europe, of which European Union countries made up two-thirds. The most popular holiday destinations in 2006 were Croatia followed by Slovakia and Italy. Demand for destinations outside Europe is growing sharply.

The general trend is not surprising but Croatia beating Slovakia is. It is the sea, I'm sure.

Most Czechs - 88.3 percent - travelled by car or bus, 8.8 percent by plane and less than three percent used railways.

The prevalence of car is obvious given the destinations. And bus, I'm sure is more popular because compared to the other two, it is much cheaper. Railways being so low is due to their insanely high prices even when compared to flying. Also, there are few direct rail links to any major European destinations other than Vienna and Berlin.
