18 years since Velvet Revolution on 17 November

Categories:  •    •    •

For the 18th time since 1989, Czechs are celebrating the end of "communism" and the beginning of "democracy". The country has seen many changes since that time but many feel nostalgia for the 'bad' old times and the communist party still has 15% representation in parliament. But the chances of going back to what it was are very small. See other events in Czech history.

See Wikipedia: The "Velvet Revolution" (Czech: sametová revoluce, Slovak: nežná revolúcia) (November 16 - December 29, 1989) refers to a non-violent revolution in Czechoslovakia that saw the overthrow of the Communist government there; it is seen as one of the most important of the Revolutions of 1989.

Hi,

Mm... the Velvet Revolution isn´t also the name for the divison of Czechloslovakia into Czech Republic and Slovakia? I think I mixed the informations, because the divison of the country, if I´m not mistaken, was in 1993... does it have a special name?

Good bye.:

Hello,

The term Velvet Revolution indeed covers just and only the political events of the end of 1989 in then-Czechoslovakia. The split of the country arrived in 1993 and did not carry any specific denomination. Maybe because it felt at that time as a regular political act and was not in any way emotionally experienced by the people themselves, at least as far I can see as a Czech person.

Best wishes for the end of the year,

Romana

Hi,

Thank you very much Romana!

Yes, I have heard already that the split of the country was a very mmm pacific event.

The funny thing is that today there still are many people who have not realised that the old Czechslovakia does not exist any more. My Czech friend told me that sometimes one comes and ask her if the Czech land is inside Russia - osh!

I think that the World Atlas editor are going bankrupt!

Thank you for the wishes, the same for you =)

Good bye.:
