It might be a bit unfair to say that Václav Klaus is a complete idiot. He's quite obviously reasonably well educated and pretty intelligent. But even well-educated and intelligent people do moronic things and this is one. Not so much the disagreement with the global warming lobby but the ease with which he lets himself be used by special interests. Also his naive belief in the power of the market which he tries to inject here has cost Czechs quite a bit of money and makes his motives more than a little suspect. Rather than admit he's been wrong on minimal regulation of markets he's willing to gamble being wrong on global warming. At the very least, he is reneging on his promise not to push as many personal and partisan agendas as his predecessor.

Czech president features in Gore-bashing ads in US press - Europe Prague - A conservative US think-tank, the Chicago-based Heartland Institute has enlisted Czech President Vaclav Klaus to feature in a series of advertisements lambasting global warming activist and former US vice president Al Gore, the daily Mlada Fronta Dnes reported Tuesday.
