It seems just like yesterday but apparently it was 160 years ago that Prague first got its gas-lit public lighting system which slowly replaced oil lamps used until then. The first two hundred lamps generated all sorts of fears about the flames people thought were going through the tubes. The system reached its peak in 1940 with almost 10,000 lamps and the last gas-lit lamps were converted to electricity only in 1985. Since 2002, over 300 new gas-lit lamps have been installed in the historic center of Prague.
